Pre-Inspection Checklist
Use this checklist to prepare your vehicle before your VSSI appointment. Addressing these items ahead of time gives your vehicle the best chance of passing on the first visit.

All headlights work (low and high beam)

Taillights and brake lights work
Turn signals work on all four corners
Hazard flashers work
Reverse lights work when in reverse
License plate light works
No cracked or broken light lenses
Headlights aim correctly (not blinding other drivers)
Windshield has no cracks in the driver's line of sight
π‘ Even small cracks can fail
All windows open and close properly
Windshield wipers work and blades are in good condition
Horn works
Seat belts for all seating positions are present and latch properly
Driver's seat adjusts and locks in position
Dashboard warning lights (check engine, ABS, airbag) are not illuminated
π‘ Resolve any warning lights before inspection
Rearview and side mirrors are secure and undamaged
Speedometer and odometer work
Heater and defroster work
All tires have adequate tread depth (at least 2/32")
π‘ Use a penny β Lincoln's head should be partially covered
No visible bulges, cuts, or damage on any tire
All tires are the same type (no mixing radial and bias-ply)
Tire pressure is correct on all four tires
All lug nuts are present and tight
Wheels have no cracks or damage
Spare tire is present and in usable condition
Brake pedal feels firm (not spongy or sinking to the floor)
Vehicle stops straight without pulling to one side
No grinding, squealing, or unusual noises when braking
Parking / emergency brake holds the vehicle on a slope
Brake fluid level is correct and no leaks visible
ABS warning light is off (if equipped)
Brake lines and hoses show no visible damage or leaks
Steering wheel has minimal play (less than 2 inches of free movement)
Vehicle tracks straight without pulling
No unusual noises when turning the steering wheel
Power steering fluid is at correct level (if equipped)
Suspension does not make clunking sounds over bumps
Vehicle does not bounce excessively (shock absorbers are functional)
No visible damage to steering linkage or tie rods
Hood latches securely and secondary latch works
All doors open, close, and latch properly from inside and outside
Trunk / cargo area latches securely
No sharp metal edges that could injure occupants
Floor is intact with no holes that allow exhaust fumes inside
Bumpers are present and securely attached
License plates are visible and properly mounted front and rear
Engine starts promptly and idles smoothly
No excessive smoke from the exhaust
Transmission shifts smoothly through all gears
No unusual vibrations at highway speeds
Fuel gauge works and tank has adequate fuel
No warning lights on the dashboard during driving
Air conditioning works (if equipped)
