The VSSI Process — What to Expect

Before your appointment at Precision Auto Care

1

Complete All Repairs First

All damage must be fully repaired before the inspection. Resolve any open safety recalls at NHTSA.gov — the BAR-SIS system checks automatically.

2

Arrive with Your Documents

Bring vehicle registration and repair receipts. The technician scans your VIN and enters your vehicle into the BAR Safety Inspection System.

3

The Inspection (2–3 Hours)

A certified technician inspects all 7 safety systems using specialized equipment, certified under penalty of perjury.

4

Receive Your Vehicle Safety Report

You'll get a printed VSR. If you pass, the Certificate of Compliance is sent electronically to the DMV. If you fail, the VSR tells you exactly what to fix.

5

Register with the DMV & Drive!

After passing, visit the DMV to complete registration. A Smog Check may also be required for 1976+ vehicles. No future VSSI needed for renewals.

Top Reasons Vehicles Fail

Prepare before your appointment

1

Open Safety Recalls

The #1 reason for failure. BAR-SIS automatically checks your VIN. Check NHTSA.gov and resolve all recalls before arriving — manufacturers fix them free.

2

Airbag System Issues

Missing airbags, non-OEM replacements, or an airbag warning light on will result in an automatic fail.

3

Temporary Spare Tire

A 'donut' spare is an automatic fail. All four wheels must have full-size tires with adequate tread (min 2/32").

4

Lighting Failures

Even a single burned-out bulb can fail the inspection. Check all lights before your appointment.

5

Seatbelt Problems

All seatbelts must retract smoothly, latch securely, and show no cuts or fraying. Test every seatbelt.
